EDward Gaming and Royal Never Give Up will clash on Saturday, October 23, in the 2021 LoL Worlds quarter-finals. It will mark their first meeting since July when EDG won 2-0. The match happened just weeks before the LPL 2021 Summer playoffs, which EDG won to emerge as China’s top LoL team.
Following their domestic success, the expectations put on EDG to perform on the international stage were high, but so far, Lee “Scout” Ye-chan and co. have yet to deliver. Despite their strong start to the tournament, EDG started showing cracks in the second round of the group stage, losing to T1 and 100 Thieves.
Two best-of-one (Bo1) defeats don’t mean much, but they prove that EDG can bleed and that they aren’t as invincible as many have thought they were. Royal Never Give Up weren’t much more impressive during their group stage run, having lost to Fnatic and Hanwha Life Esports.
Even in their wins, RNG weren’t very convincing and were a bit lucky to end the group stage with a 4-2 record. One thing to take away from RNG’s games is that they usually struggle if you ban out their Twisted Fate and Ziggs, get Li “Xiaohu” Yuan-Hao off his comfort picks, and shut down their top side.
Still, RNG can work around that on the red side by getting their top laner in a favourable matchup. This seems more like a toss-up rather than an EDG-favoured match, so there is a chance that we see five maps (+165), but we will take a shot with the reigning Mid-Season Invitational champions.
