100 Thieves won VALORANT, UNLIMIT claimed Apex Legends and DarkAngel took FATAL FURY during Esports World Cup Week 1.

The opening week of the Esports World Cup 2026 delivered three very different champions, with UNLIMIT, DarkAngel and 100 Thieves taking the first trophies of the seven-week festival in Paris.
UNLIMIT completed a remarkable comeback in Apex Legends, Natus Vincere’s DarkAngel powered through the FATAL FURY bracket, and 100 Thieves ended a long wait for an international VALORANT title. Those victories also put the first major points on the board in the 2026 EWC Club Championship race.

UNLIMIT produced the most dramatic championship run of the opening week, coming from deep in the field to win the Apex Legends Esports World Cup title.
The Japanese squad only just reached the Match Point Finals, progressing from the group stage in 14th place after edging Virtus.pro through a tiebreaker. They were hardly viewed as one of the leading title contenders when the final lobby began, and a quiet start did little to change that impression.
Everything shifted late in the day. With Sentinels threatening to close the tournament, UNLIMIT won Game 7 to keep the championship alive and finally establish themselves as a serious threat. By Game 10, they were battling Wolves Esports and ZETA DIVISION for the trophy.
UNLIMIT delivered again when the pressure was at its highest, taking their second victory of the final to secure the organisation’s first S-Tier Apex Legends title. The result earned them US$600,000, while Peace was recognised as the Finals MVP after helping guide the team through the decisive closing matches.

Luis Guadalupe “DarkAngel” Castillo Gomez claimed the first individual title of EWC 2026 after defeating Kenta “mi2ha4” Ichihara 5-1 in the FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves grand final.
The Mexican player did not take a simple route to the trophy. An early loss dropped him into the lower bracket during the first group stage, forcing him to rebuild his tournament run without any room for another major mistake.
DarkAngel responded with a dominant second group stage before surviving one of the closest matches of the tournament in the playoffs. He edged Reynald “Reynald” Tacsuan 5-4 in the quarterfinals, then beat veteran Japanese player Naoki “Nemo” Nemoto to reach the title match.
There was far less drama in the grand final. DarkAngel controlled the match against mi2ha4 and ran away with a 5-1 victory, earning US$250,000 and collecting 1,000 Club Championship points for Natus Vincere.
The victory was also a major moment for the Mexican fighting game community, with DarkAngel turning years of local support and tournament experience into the biggest championship of his career.
100 Thieves closed the first week with a landmark result of their own, defeating NRG 3-1 to win the VALORANT Esports World Cup 2026 title.
The North American organisation completed the event without losing a series. After navigating the GSL group stage, 100 Thieves survived consecutive 2-1 playoff wins over MIBR and Nongshim RedForce to reach Sunday’s grand final.
NRG entered the decider with the confidence of reigning world champions, but 100 Thieves refused to let the occasion overwhelm them. They took control of the best-of-five and finished the job in four maps, ending the organisation’s long wait for a major international VALORANT trophy.
The championship earned 100 Thieves US$600,000 and 1,000 Club Championship points. Matthew “Cryocells” Panganiban was named tournament MVP after playing a central role throughout the unbeaten run.

With three tournaments completed, Natus Vincere and 100 Thieves sit level at the top of the early EWC Club Championship standings with 1,000 points apiece.
NRG, Team Vision and Virtus.pro each collected 750 points after finishing as runners-up during the first week. Those early totals could become important later in the festival, especially once clubs begin adding results across several different games.
UNLIMIT are the unusual case among the opening champions. Although they won the Apex Legends competition, the organisation has no other team competing at EWC 2026. Club Championship eligibility requires an organisation to record top-eight finishes in at least two separate tournaments, leaving UNLIMIT outside the standings despite their championship victory.
Team Vitality became the first organisation to satisfy that requirement. Fifth-place finishes in both VALORANT and FATAL FURY gave Vitality two top-eight results, making them officially eligible to compete for the overall Club Championship.
The first three champions have been crowned, but the wider competition is only beginning. Every remaining tournament can reshape the Club Championship standings, and clubs with teams entered across several titles will now have the chance to build an advantage over the specialists.
UNLIMIT, DarkAngel and 100 Thieves have set the early standard. The attention now turns to the next wave of tournaments and which organisations can turn strong individual results into a genuine run at the overall EWC crown.
