VK Gaming claim the ALGS Midseason Playoffs title in Riyadh, defeating top teams in a dramatic Match Point Final at the Esports World Cup.
VK Gaming have etched their name into Apex Legends history with a sensational Match Point victory at the ALGS Midseason Playoffs, claiming the trophy in front of a sold-out Esports World Cup crowd in Riyadh. The APAC-South underdog squad of Cai “Kasssa” Denglang, Chen “QQ” Yin-hong, and Wang “LqDuD” Yipeng defied the odds, becoming just the second team from the region—after DarkZero Esports—to win an Apex Legends Global Series title and pocketed US$600,000 from the US$2 million prize pool.
Despite not being among the pre-tournament favourites with esports betting sites, VK Gaming burst out of the gates with a dominant win in the first match and never let up. Their aggressive gameplay consistently pushed for kills and zone control, recording seven top-10 finishes, with five of them being inside the top five. After heartbreak in match eight, where Gen.G denied them the title at the final hurdle, VK bounced back immediately to close out the championship in match nine.
The Esports World Cup event followed the ALGS Match Point format, where teams must first reach 50 points before being eligible to win with a first-place finish. VK hit match point in match five but had to battle through heavyweights like TSM, ROC Esports, and Ninjas in Pyjamas to secure the final win. ROC, despite winning two matches and being the first to reach match point, ultimately fell short in the clutch, finishing second overall.
Meanwhile, tournament favourites Alliance, fresh off a dominant pool stage, floundered in the finals and placed 11th. Team Falcons, the local heroes, couldn’t convert momentum into a win and settled for sixth.
VK Gaming’s win reignites calls for an official broadcast in the Asia-Pacific South region, with three of the top five teams in the finals hailing from there. With the ALGS Championship in Sapporo now on the horizon, VK Gaming’s statement win has firmly reshaped the global Apex Legends landscape.
