PGL Astana 2026 starts on May 9 with 16 CS2 teams, a US$1.6m prize pool, and opening matches led by Falcons, G2 and Spirit.

PGL announced the opening matches for the upcoming Counter-Strike 2 tournament, PGL Astana 2026, on Monday, May 4, with the action set to begin on May 9.
Offering a massive US$1,600,000 prize pool, PGL Astana is one of the most lucrative Counter-Strike 2 tournaments of the season and has attracted several of the world’s strongest teams.
In total, 16 teams will compete in Kazakhstan. Eleven squads secured invites through their Valve Regional Standings (VRS) as of the March update, while the remaining five booked their spots through regional qualifiers in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.
The tournament will be split into two stages, starting with a 16-team Swiss Stage. All matches in the opening stage will be played as best-of-three, with the top eight teams advancing to the playoffs.
The knockout stage will then move into a single-elimination bracket. Every playoff match will be played as a best-of-three, except for the grand final, which will be a best-of-five.
With all 16 teams starting their campaign in the Swiss Stage, the opening-round matchups were only confirmed on Monday when PGL revealed the full first-day schedule.
The first round includes several interesting storylines. Aurora Gaming will open the day against HEROIC and their former player Yasin “xfl0ud” Koç, while later in the schedule, Team Spirit will take on a familiar opponent in The Huns Esports.
FURIA will also face Monte for the first time, in what looks like one of the more competitive opening-round fixtures.
However, much of the attention will be on Team Falcons, who are set to debut Finn “karrigan” Andersen as their new in-game leader.
The former FaZe Clan strategist has been handed a favourable opening match, with Falcons set to face K27, one of the lowest-rated teams in the tournament. Still, K27 are not complete pushovers, especially after recently adding former Major champion Petr “fame” Bolyshev.
The best CS2 betting sites are giving Team Falcons a 95.2% implied probability of winning the series, pricing karrigan and his new squad at -2000. Most of the other opening-round matches, however, look far more competitive on paper.
