NEW YORK SUBLINERS vs MINNESOTA RØKKR CDL PLAYOFFS BETTING PREVIEW

The New York Subliners and Minnesota RØKKR are slated to meet this Thursday in the first round of the Call of Duty League (CDL) 2020 playoffs, which will mark their third meeting of the season.

While the RØKKR were far from impressive during the regular season, they enter the CDL playoffs as one of the more exciting and unpredictable teams in the field. That has a lot to do with their debatable roster changes in recent weeks.

In July, Alex “Alexx” Carpenter moved to the starting roster in place of Kaden “Exceed” Stockdale, who returned just over two weeks later as a replacement for Adam “GodRx” Brown. Considering GodRx is one of the better snipers in the league, losing a player of his quality without having a proper replacement could spell problems.

Even though the RØKKR’s numbers must be taken with a grain of salt due to all their roster changes, there is no denying that they struggle on Search & Destroy. In fact, they are the worst team in the league on S&D with a 12-24 record and -0.64 differential. On a more positive note, Minnesota are sixth in Hardpoint with a 25-23 record and -0.19 differential, and seventh in Domination with 13-15 and -2.36.

While those numbers are not exactly terrible, it’s difficult to be optimistic about the RØKKR and their chances of making a deep run this season. First they face New York Subliners, who they have yet to defeat, while they likely to meet another bogey team in OpTic Gaming Los Angeles later in the losers’ bracket.

The Subliners, meanwhile, are a team that could impress in the playoffs. While their road through the second and third rounds of the winners’ bracket looks challenging, NY deserve a lot of praise for their resurgence in the latter stages of the season.

The problem with the Subliners is their unpredictability. Since winning their home series in July, when they defeated Chicago Huntsmen 3-0 in the grand finals, the team’s results have looked a bit iffy. They could only manage fifth-sixth place at the recent London series, where their only win was a 3-1 result against Los Angeles Guerrillas.

For New York to succeed, they need to work on their S&D (17-20) and Domination (13-17), where they are ranked only ninth-best in the league. In better news, the Subliners hold a solid 27-23 record and +6.6 differential on Hardpoint, where they rank fourth in the division.

These teams met at the Florida homestand in May and later at the New York series in July. The Subliners won the first clash 3-0, albeit with the narrowest of wins on Hardpoint (250-249) and Search & Destroy (6-5) before sealing the series with a nine-point win on Domination (159-150). The second meeting was more one-sided despite the 3-1 scoreline, as NY enjoyed big wins on Hardpoint (250-144, 250-157) and S&D (6-3) despite giving up Domination (141-159).

Given those results, it makes sense that New York are priced as heavy favourites for this match. Although the Subliners have looked a bit sloppy of late – at least in contrast to their home series – we can’t look past the RØKKR’s 0-8 run heading into the playoffs. Minnesota have won only seven of 31 maps in that stretch, so the form is alarming.

The Subliners are far from the most consistent team in the league, but they are still miles ahead of the RØKKR right now. Seeing as New York have won six maps out of seven against Minnesota this season, we like the favourites at the -1.5 line.
