The brother of an esports star has been arrested for the murder of his mother.

The League of Legends community has been left gutted after it was revealed Yihong Peng, the brother of Team Liquid star Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng, has been detained for the murder of Wei Ping Shen and the stabbing of his father, whose name has not been released by authorities.

The 30-year olds’ motives for the stabbing are currently under investigation, but through testimonies, the initial thought is that the parents were trying to console their son over a breakup.

Doublelift has released a brief statement via social media.

“Regarding the recent news. This weekend I received some terrible news. My older brother attacked both of my parents with a knife. As a result of this attack, my mom passed away and my dad was seriously hurt and is now recovering in hospital.

“I’m still processing this news and joining up with my dad and little brother to make sure they’re ok and the proper arrangements are being made. I’ll likely be quiet on social media while I work through this. I hope you all understand and support me as you always have in the past. -DL,” he wrote.

It has been a rocky journey for Doublelift to the top of the esports chain having ran away from home at a very young age in order to play video games competitively. His parents were heavily dismayed by his decision but since have repaired the relationship.

Yihong is being held under a one-million-dollar bail according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Doublelift and TL – Past

Doublelift has performed nothing short of stellar in the past weeks during playoffs. First off, in his match against C9, the North American born talent went deathless in three matches, an incredibly impressive feat. Doublelift was not the sole factor to determine these games, but having one of your two major DPM characters always on the Rift high damage and kill participation is always a plus. As a result, TL swept C9 3-0 and moved to the semi finals.

This week, semi finals took place against Echo Fox. While FOX were the 2nd seed, they had been looking shaky and TL exploited their problems early on. Again, the man himself only died two times in their four matches, a brutally glaring statistic. His pocket pick Ashe was surprising and his kill percentage still soaring in those four matches, and ultimately Doublelift won the MVP of the series, outperforming everybody.

Doublelift and TL – The Future

With this news in tow, there will have to be some significant movements from Doublelift and his organization.

Doublelift’s rocky relationship with his parents saw him move out of home at 16 to follow his esports dream in a time when players did not make a decent living. It was the relationship with his brother that was the main source of support for Doublelift early in his career. Having this happen is cruelfor the NA superstar and we can only imagine what he is going through.

It seems almost certain his team will offer Doublelift a leave of absence.

Where does this leave Team Liquid with finals looming? This definitely puts TL in a tough spot; DL was one of, if not the, most prominent players on their team and without him this weekend, their chances of a surefire botlane ADC dwindles. If he plays his mental state must be called into question.

At the end of the day, we can only wish DL the best to both progress with his current life dilemma.
