Esports teams worldwide have begun securing their spots in the fast-approaching 2022 League of Legends World Championship. The event is one of the most anticipated competitions of the year and will see the top teams from different regions around the world fight to receive the championship title.

The prestigious tournament will once again be held in North America, and will kick off on September 29. The League Championship Series (LCS) will assume the position as the event’s host league this year. This is LCS’s first time playing host since the season in 2016.

The fast-approaching World Championship 2022 will also be the first time since 2019 that tournament organizers will allow fans to physically attend all the stages of the event. Two years ago, a number of fans were permitted to witness the match between DAMWON Gaming, representing Korea, and Suning, representing China, in the tournament’s grand finals. Since then, fans have not been invited back to Worlds due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Worlds tournament this year will take place in several locations at varying stages. The play-in stage will be held in Mexico City, while New York will be the location for the group stage. Atlanta, Georgia, will host the event’s semifinals, while the grand finals will be held in San Francisco, California.

Almost all top-tier domestic leagues worldwide will be represented at Worlds 2022. The League of Legends Continental League (LCL) will notably be unable to attend the tournament due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The conflict led to the cancellation of the region’s regular season.

However, the Vietnam region will be represented in this year’s event by two teams from the VCS 2022 summer season. The region has been absent from international tournaments for the past two years.

A total of 24 teams from 11 regions will be a part of the 2022 Worlds. The teams will be seeded during the play-in and group stages of the tournament based on their performance in the playoffs as well as championship points. The total prize pool is over US$2 million, and the winner will be named the 12th world champion in the history of League of Legends.
