There were no outright shocks on the first night of IEM Rio 2026, but the favourites did not all have it easy.

Vitality and FURIA were the two teams that looked the most in control from start to finish, while G2, NAVI, Aurora and MOUZ all had moments where a slip into the lower bracket felt possible.

Vitality produced the cleanest result of the night in Group A. They went in at -10000 against RED Canids and completely controlled the series, winning Nuke 13-4 before backing it up with a 13-6 result on Overpass. It was a sharp, ruthless start, and once ZywOo took over, RED never really found a way back into the match.

G2 had a much rougher path than the market suggested. They were priced at -217.39 against Gentle Mates, but dropped Inferno 8-13 to fall behind early. From there, G2 finally settled into the series, taking Mirage 13-8 and then smashing Overpass 13-3 to escape with a 2-1 win. They got through, but it was hardly the kind of clean opening performance they would have wanted.

Team Spirit were shorter again at -1000 against Team Liquid and mostly played like it. Ancient was a mismatch at 13-2, and while Dust2 got closer at 13-11, Spirit still looked like the stronger side whenever the pressure lifted. It was not flawless, but it was convincing enough.

Falcons also moved on with a 2-0 win over 3DMAX after opening at -285.71. Inferno stayed competitive for a while before Falcons closed it 13-10, then the second map turned into one of the biggest beatings of the day, with Falcons rolling to a 13-1 win on Ancient.

Group B followed a similar pattern.

FURIA came in at -769.23 against Passion UA and delivered one of the most polished wins of the round. They took Inferno 13-3, then closed Mirage 13-7 to complete a comfortable 2-0. For a team playing in front of a home crowd, it was close to the perfect start.

NAVI had one of the strangest series of the night. They were favourites at -588.24 against B8 and opened with a brutal 13-0 win on Ancient, only to lose Inferno 4-13 and suddenly turn the match into a real contest. Dust2 restored order, though, with NAVI closing the decider 13-5 to avoid what would have been a disastrous early stumble.

Aurora got through HOTU in straight maps as -526.32 favourites, but the series was tighter than the 2-0 suggests. Mirage was simple enough at 13-4, yet Dust2 dragged deep before Aurora finally edged it 16-13. On paper it goes down as a clean sweep, but there was a lot more resistance there than expected.

MOUZ were also pushed harder than the odds implied. They started at -370.37 against Legacy and lost Dust2 9-13 to hand the underdog an early lead. After that, MOUZ found another gear, winning Inferno 13-10 and then putting the series away with a commanding 13-4 on Mirage.

That leaves Vitality against G2 and Spirit against Falcons on the upper side of Group A, while Group B now moves into FURIA versus NAVI and Aurora versus MOUZ.

In the lower bracket, RED Canids face Gentle Mates, Team Liquid meet 3DMAX, Passion UA take on B8, and HOTU now drop into an elimination match against Legacy.
