Team Liquid suffered a bad loss against DRX in the opening round of Group C, falling 8-13 on Abyss and 10-13 on Bind. EDward Gaming did not fare any better against NRG, who bested the defending world champions with 17-15 on Abyss and 13-11 on Corrode.

While neither defeat was a complete blowout, Liquid and EDG underperformed. The VCT EMEA representatives were, however, bigger losers, as they entered the match as -277.78 favorites on the best esports sportsbooks.

Having shown higher highs in the final split of the year, Team Liquid are considered a better team ahead of Friday’s affair. However, they have not been performing well this season, and their iffy display against DRX might suggest that Liquid’s run to the Stage 3 title was a fluke.

Despite not having reached the same heights as in 2024, EDward Gaming are a competent squad and should not be such massive underdogs against the inconsistent Team Liquid.

The outsiders offer some value at these numbers.

Sentinels were humiliated in the opening match of Group A, when they were reverse-swept by GIANTX, losing 13-4 on Sunset and 13-9 on Haven. On the other hand, XLG Esports had to admit defeat to the tournament favorites, Paper Rex, and lost their first fixture with 9-13 on Bind and 5-13 on Sunset.

Having placed top three in all VCT Americas events this season, Sentinels were viewed as serious dark horses to win VALORANT Champions. However, they have been anything but convincing since the start of August, especially on Sunset, which is one of their weakest maps.

Luckily, XLG Esports’ map pool is very shallow, as they only do well on Haven, where they are 4-2 since the start of July.

Sentinels have a better, 3-1, record on the map but also hold an +80% win rate on Lotus and Corrode.

Despite their round-one slip-up, Sentinels are rightly viewed as the favorites.
