Serral defeats Classic 5–2 in the 2025 Esports World Cup final to claim his third SC2 world title and $200,000 in Riyadh. Team BASILISK tops again.

Joona “Serral” Sotala has once again etched his name into esports history, defeating Kim “Classic” Doh-woo in a 5-2 grand final to win the StarCraft II title at the 2025 Esports World Cup in Riyadh.
The Finnish Zerg maestro took home the $200,000 first-place prize, 1,000 Club Points for Team BASILISK, and an emphatic third world championship—cementing his legacy as the greatest StarCraft II player of the modern era.
After an uncharacteristic early exit at EWC 2024, Serral arrived in Riyadh with something to prove. Though he never got his rematch with Clément “Clem” Desplanches—the French Terran who stunned him last year—he did exact revenge on behalf of the Zerg swarm by dominating the man who knocked Clem out: Classic.
In a metagame long starved of Protoss glory, Classic came closer than most to snapping the race’s 10-year title drought. But despite his clean macro play and masterful unit control, Classic could do little to stem the tide of Serral’s relentless creep spread and surgical engagements.
The result continued a cruel trend: another world title slips through the fingers of the Protoss.
Serral’s performance wasn’t just a personal triumph—it was a statement of dominance for Team BASILISK. The Finnish star ran through a stacked bracket, taking out his own teammate Riccardo “Reynor” Romiti in the quarters before breezing past Team Liquid’s Cure in the semis.
Alongside his share of the winnings, Serral handed BASILISK a haul of 1,000 points. Classic’s Virtus.pro outfit settled for second, while Cure (Team Liquid) and Solar (Team Falcons) rounded out the top four.
With the Zerg swarm now reigning supreme in StarCraft II, the Esports World Cup action continues at full throttle. Next up: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 takes centre stage, with the world’s top squads ready to clash in what promises to be a high-octane showdown. Expect tactical brilliance, explosive plays, and more unforgettable moments as the battle for supremacy marches on in Riyadh.
