G2 Esports news

HEROIC have confirmed that AWPer Álvaro “SunPayus” García and coach Eetu “sAw” Saha will depart the team following the BLAST.tv Austin Major, joining G2 Esports in a significant post-tournament roster shake-up.

The announcement, made on May 27, comes in compliance with Valve’s conflict-of-interest policy, which requires all such transfers involving Major Counter-Strike 2 teams to be publicly disclosed before the event. HEROIC had originally intended to keep the deal under wraps until after the tournament but were forced to reveal it early due to the ruling.

The transfer had already been reported earlier this month, which revealed that a verbal agreement had been reached between the two organisations.

SunPayus, who joined HEROIC in January 2025 after a stint on Team Falcons’ inactive roster, has been a stabilising presence for the team. Despite a year of transition, he emerged as HEROIC’s third highest-rated player in 2025 with a 1.11 rating. His consistency and tactical discipline made him a valuable addition following the exits of Rene “TeSeS” Madsen, Damjan “kyxsan” Stoilkovski, and Abdulkhalik “degster” Gasanov.

After taking over as the HEROIC coach in 2023, sAw was instrumental in the team’s continued Major qualifications amid a revolving door of roster changes.

Under his leadership, HEROIC captured titles at both the CCT Season 2 Global Finals and the MESA Nomadic Masters Spring in recent months. The team currently sits 15th in the CS2 Valve Regional Standings and enters the BLAST.tv Austin Major through the European Regional Qualifier, where they will face Chinggis Warriors in Stage 1.

For G2, the move signals a new era as they attempt to recover from the losses of star AWPer Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov and in-game leader Nikola “NiKo” Kovač. The team had been relying on Polish sniper Aleksander “hades” Miśkiewicz—signed on loan from Monte—but with his deal expiring after the Major, G2 has turned to SunPayus as a long-term replacement.

The Spanish AWPer’s reunion with sAw—his former coach at ENCE—adds to the promise. The pair previously helped ENCE to deep runs at IEM Cologne and a trophy at IEM Dallas in 2023. Their familiarity could prove vital as G2 looks to rebuild quickly with a coherent vision.

The transition also spells the end of Wiktor “TaZ” Wojtas’ tenure as head coach at G2. The legendary Polish figure steps down after 18 months at the helm, during which G2 endured both title pushes and rebuilding phases.

G2 now hands the reins to sAw, whose proven eye for talent and effective coaching on a budget are likely to give him more control over roster moves moving forward. His appointment suggests the organisation is planning for sustainable growth rather than quick-fix signings.

With the move, both G2 and HEROIC are left with one final opportunity to make roster changes in the current offseason without risking their VRS status and losing direct invites to future tournaments.

As HEROIC enter the Austin Major for one last ride with their outgoing AWPer and coach, the team has joked that they are “back in the kitchen cooking something spicy.” They’ll need it—because come July, they’ll be rebuilding from scratch once again.

Meanwhile, G2 can now look ahead to the post-Major season with renewed direction, fresh leadership, and a top-tier AWPer who may not be as flashy as his predecessor but brings the kind of structure and reliability the team desperately needs.
