LEC Summer tiebreaker rules amended to correct Riot Games error

A critical tiebreaker method was removed when Riot Games updated the official LEC rulebook, but that issue has now been resolved.

LoL EMEA Championship (LEC)

Two weeks into the League of Legends EMEA Championship Summer, Riot Games has announced a small rule change for the final split of the European league.

According to an X post from LEC commissioner Artem Bykov, Riot made a mistake and removed a head-to-head score tiebreaker criterion for the group stage.

This has now been re-added and updated in the official EMEA competitive rulebook.

When several teams finish on the same points total, tiebreakers are needed to decide which sides advance to the next stage of the split.

With the changed format for the LEC Summer — now featuring two groups of five rather than one group of 10 teams – the possibility of two teams ending the first stage with the same records is higher.

The head-to-head record is typically the first method to break a tie between teams with the same win-loss records.

The LEC rulebook, which shows the tiebreaker criteria in section 7.5.13 (titled: Summer Split Tiebreaker), did not include the head-to-head game score among the list.

With the updated rules, the official tiebreaker criteria are:

  • Head-to-Head Game Score
  • Winter and Spring combined Split Placements
  • Spring Placement
  • Strength of Victory (SoV)
  • Head-to-Head Victory Time
  • Overall Victory Time
  • Coinflip

The rule includes an exception for teams tied in fifth place, who will always play a tiebreaker game.

If there is a tie between three or more teams that involves fifth place in their group, all ties for third place and higher will be resolved using the above criteria until there are only two teams left, leading to a tiebreaker match.

The rule adjustment has no impact on the current standings, as the mistake was caught relatively early in the split.

The LEC 2025 Summer continues on August 16, when KOI face off against Natus Vincere, followed by a clash between two winless Group B teams, Team Heretics and SK Gaming.
