What is Call of Duty League?

The 2020 Call of Duty League was the inaugural season of a franchised professional Call of Duty league competition. The league was officially announced on October 10, 2019, while the maiden campaign kicked off on January 24, 2020 and concluded on August 30, 2020 with Dallas Empire claiming the title.

COD LeaguesTo continue with the tradition of the previous Call of Duty tournaments, CDL uses the newest CoD game title – currently Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, which was released in November 2022. All games are played 5v5 on PC with pre-set gameplay settings and any league-approved controller.

In words of Activision Blizzard, the Call of Duty League was launched in order to foster competitive balance within COD pro scene and provide players with the opportunity to compete regularly during the season, which will help with player development at all levels of Call of Duty esports.

  • New teams, new logo, new rules

On October 9, 2019, the Call of Duty League exposed itself to the world for the first time when a new league logo was put on display. Unlike the CWL logo used in the previous league, the CDL logo displays three pillars, which are positioned in a way to form a staircase that represents all three levels of CoD esports scene: professional, amateur and community.

    COD League New Logo

The Call of Duty League features 12 franchised teams from four different countries, each with a roster of seven to 10 players.

Many teams from the old CWL were not able to meet the demands to participate in the CDL, which required esports organizations to pay US $25 million for a spot in the league. Others joined forces with major esports organizations and businesses to secure a place, meaning we will see the return of some well-known names.

The teams now participating in the CDL are: Atlanta Faze, Boston Breach, Florida Mutineers, London Royal Ravens, Los Angeles Guerrillas, Los Angeles Thieves, OpTic Texas, Minnesota Røkkr, New York Subliners, Vegas Legion, Seattle Surge and Toronto Ultra.

The newly formed league also implemented a new set of rules to protect professional players from being exploited by their teams and organizations. All pro players will sign official contracts that will guarantee them a base salary of US $50,000 as well as healthcare and retirement benefits. Adding to that, an additional rule also states that all teams are required to split at least 50% of tournament winnings with their members.

The inaugural Call of Duty League season was played on the PlayStation 4 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in a 5v5 team format. For CDL 2021, that was changed to a 4v4 format on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, with a variety of PC controller options.

Call of Duty League structure and format

Throughout the season, teams will compete with each other and earn ranks based on their match wins and losses that will determine which teams will advance into the playoffs. Those standings will also impact the seedings for the CDL Major every stage.

Call of Duty Challengers

Call of Duty Challengers serves as an official path-to-pro system for amateur players from all over the globe. It will play an important role in the CDL itself, as it will allow the best undiscovered players to fight their way into the professional scene.

Call of Duty Challengers is similar to Overwatch Contenders, which allows amateur players to compete in official tournaments, make a name for themselves, get spotted by scouts and join the pro scene. In one way, CoD Challengers acts as a minor league to the CDL and a gateway into the top tier of competition.

CoD Challengers features a number of online competitions played throughout the CDL season. Players are ranked according to how many Challenger Points they collect in these events, and team seedings are based on the combined points tally of all players. The events also carry a prize pool of over US $700,000.

All CoD Challenger events use the same gameplay settings as the CDL. Anyone over the age of 18 can compete in online competitions by creating a GameBattles account, assembling a team and signing up for CoD Challengers events.

Call of Duty League City Circuit

Call of Duty League City CircuitCOD City Circuit caters to the third level of competitive play – the causal scene. The CDL City Circuit events will help take the causal competition to the next level, giving the fans a chance to compete on behalf of their cities or favourite teams.

Players may sign up in duos to compete in Gunfight matches for a chance to win prizes and an invitation to compete in CDL events. This fan-focused competitive circuit will culminate in the finals event at the CoD Championship Weekend.

Tips for betting on the COD League

The COD League is shaping up as one of the biggest esports betting events this year, with excitement growing around this fledgling franchise-based competition. Here are some things you can do to give yourself the best chance of success when betting on the Call of Duty League.

  • How to watch the COD League? The COD League will be streamed via several different sources, including Youtube and Twitch. Read our guide to live streaming COD to find out more about the options for watching professional video games.
  • Educated betting: Right now it’s end of the 2022 season and we know very little about the make-up of the COD teams for the new league. This means it would be stupid to bet on COD League, because you simply have no idea. Wait until you know about the teams before betting.
  • Find the next COD star: Call of Duty League is sure to unearth some new stars that we have never heard of before, which means the most savvy COD bettors will keep an eye on things like the Development League, or even the City Circuit, where freakishly good players can still be found.
  • Find the best COD League odds: COD betting sites can often have big differences in their betting odds for the CDL, which means you should always hold multiple bookmaker accounts. For instance one CDL head to head match priced a team at 2.60 while others had the same team as short as 2.00.
