G2 Esports will face Karmine Corp in their Esports World Cup opener on Tuesday, July 8, but they’ll be doing so without a key piece of their starting five.

Veteran duelist Nathan “leaf” Orf has been ruled out of the tournament due to medical issues, forcing the team to reshuffle just days before the big match.

Leaf unable to play in EWC

Their clash in Riyadh kicks off at 10am BST / 9am UTC / 4am CT, and it’s shaping up to be one of the marquee fixtures on Day 1 of VALORANT’s World Cup campaign.

With leaf unable to travel on doctor’s advice, G2 will turn to assistant coach Peter “shhhack” Belej to fill the gap on short notice.

While not an active player in recent seasons, shhhack brings years of experience from both VALORANT and Counter-Strike 2, and previously competed professionally before moving into coaching.

The announcement came over the weekend, with G2 confirming leaf had begun experiencing health problems shortly after VALORANT Masters Toronto.

The exact nature of the issue remains private, but the organisation said his long-term well-being comes first.

G2 head coach Josh “JoshRT” Lee said the decision wasn’t taken lightly.

“Leaf wants to compete, but this is something we can’t ignore,” Lee explained.

“We’re fully behind him as he recovers, and we’ll be ready whenever he is.”

Leaf’s absence will be felt — especially given his status as one of the team’s most seasoned talents — but with VCT Americas Stage 2 just around the corner, there’s still hope he could rejoin the squad later in the month.

G2’s opening Americas fixture is scheduled for July 20, giving the 20-year-old a slim window for recovery before that campaign begins.

For now, it’s up to shhhack and the rest of the G2 core to navigate one of the most stacked international tournaments on the calendar — and it all starts against Karmine Corp on Tuesday.
