The second day of Counter-Strike 2 action at Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Cologne wrapped up on Thursday, with three teams advancing and three early exits. GamerLegion, Ninjas in Pyjamas and FaZe Clan all punched their tickets to Stage 2, while MIBR, B8 and Complexity bowed out. In between, Virtus.pro, Team Liquid, FlyQuest, TYLOO, HEROIC and 3DMAX set up a tense final day of qualification matches.
GamerLegion led the day’s headlines with a 2-0 win over Virtus.pro. Oldřich “PR” Nový (1.52 rating) and Fredrik “REZ” Sterner (1.35) were outstanding, bookending Dust2 with multi-kill impact before closing Ancient. Erik “ztr” Gustafsson’s men withstood Virtus.pro’s mid-series surge and now coast into Stage 2, while the Russians drop to the lower bracket to face HEROIC.
Ninjas in Pyjamas followed suit, dispatching 3DMAX 2-0. Artem “r1nkle” Moroz’s all-headshot USP 4K flipped Nuke on its head, Kacper “xKacpersky” Gabara bullied mid rounds all series long, and the Swedes cruised on Dust2 after another 5-7 recovery half. Alexandre “bodyy” Pianaro’s hot start couldn’t stop the slide; 3DMAX now fight for survival against FISSURE Playground #1 champions TYLOO.
FaZe looked revitalised in a 2-1 victory over Liquid, smashing them on Mirage (13-6) and Nuke (13-2) around a scrappy Inferno loss. Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s terrorist side calling was on point, Helvijs “broky” Saukants was sharp, and the rifle trio was humming. Liquid showed life through Roland “ultimate” Tomkowiak, Kamil “siuhy” Szkaradek, and Guy “NertZ” Iluz but were mauled in the decider and now drop to a do-or-die versus FlyQuest.
TYLOO survived Complexity in a 2-1 thriller, turning a 5-10 Ancient deficit into a series-saving comeback. The North American squad never figured out full-buy closes, as Håkon “hallzerk” Fjærli admitted post-match. Complexity exited IEM Cologne after wasting their chances on Overpass and Ancient.
FlyQuest finally broke through with a win, edging B8 2-1 in double overtime on Inferno for their first win with Justin “jks” Savage. Declan “Vexite” Portelli’s clutch defuses, and a quad-kill A-hold from jks sealed it, despite comical post-plant bungles on A from both sides. They now meet Liquid for a spot in the main event.
HEROIC, powered by their youth core, eliminated MIBR with a dominant 2-0 score. Tobias “TOBIZ” Theo’s roster showed their best blueprint yet with Andrey “tN1R” Tatarinovich back to form, Linus “nilo” Bergman’s heroics, and Gleb “gr1ks” Gazin’s composure. Felipe “insani” Yuji’s 1.34 event rating wasn’t enough to save a faltering Brazilian side.
With GamerLegion, Ninjas in Pyjamas and FaZe already through, the final Stage 1 day now hinges on another six series, when five more teams will advance to Stage 2.
The final day of matches in Stage 1 of IEM Cologne will take place on Friday, with all but one series being an elimination or qualification game. Odds are courtesy of the top esports betting sites.
