Valve has announced that there will be some changes to the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major RMR events.
The game developer and event organizer introduced a new ranking system called the Regional Standings to simplify the qualification process for CS:GO Major events. The system tracks the results of multiple events to determine which teams should be invited to the later stages of qualification for future events. The goal of this change is to streamline the qualification process.
“Teams play meaningful matches in third-party events throughout the year. To reduce the burden on Major participants and streamline the Major qualification process, we’re going to leverage those match results to identify teams that should be invited to later qualification stages,” the game organizer announced.
“Our goals for the resulting Regional Standings are that they are accurate, not easily gamed, and have a transparent process.”
Valve has published the rankings for the Americas, Europe, and Asia, which are determined by a combination of the team’s prize pool earnings, the strength of their opponents, and their head-to-head results against other teams. The opponent strength ratings will be based significantly on the team’s expected win rate compared to their actual win rate.
“We will use the Regional Standings to invite teams in future events, so the ideal model is one that predicts future match results,” the game developer said.
“To that end, the current model incorporates the following factors:
Team’s
– Prize money earned
Beaten opponent’s
– Prize money earned
– Number of teams beaten
Head-to-head results

According to the Dec. 21 rankings, Liquid is currently the top team in the Americas, while Heroic is in first place in Europe. In Asia, Lynn Vision is the highest-ranked team. The Outsiders, who recently won a major tournament, are ranked third in Europe behind Heroic and G2.
The Regional Standings will be used to decide which teams will be eligible to participate in the closed qualifiers for Regional Major Ranking events, which are tournaments that determine which teams will qualify for Majors and at what stage they will begin. The first time this will be implemented is for the BLAST Paris Major in May 2023.
“We will update the standings periodically up until the open qualifiers,” Valve said.
“These final standings will determine which teams get invited to the closed qualifiers. All other teams will need to compete in the open qualifiers to secure their spot.”
The closed qualifiers will be composed of the top teams in each region’s Regional Standings, which will be regularly updated until the beginning of the open qualifiers. All other teams will have to participate in the open qualifiers. In past Major events, the RMR tournaments have included both teams that reached the previous Major and those that qualified through the open qualifiers.
